by Jasmine Brianna Ellison ![]() Upon appointing a vice president at the Renzulli Gifted and Talented Academy, it seemed only right that Freddie DeJesus would be promoted to the position. Longtime teacher and leader at Renzulli, was acting as the school leader without compensation for the past two years. However, the school district decided not to appoint him the school’s vice principal, instead choosing a white applicant with no connections to the school. Latia Maldonado, said parents of the students respect DeJesus and would like his leadership back. She stated, “He’s well-respected. He’s the heart of the school. And we want somebody who looks like us in that position. We want Mr. DeJesus reinstated to his position and we want more teachers of color in the Hartford school system, people who look like us and can represent us.” by Jasmine Brianna Ellison The news caters to the residents in the suburban and industrial areas of Connecticut, and the faces of the inner-city are seen only in the capacity of crime or charity.
The total population in the state is 3,588,184 million and approximately 88% of that number is considered a minority. Although the minority population exceeds the White, The Hartford Courant reports a total of 73% White subscribers. The highest circulated newspaper in the state maintains roughly 300,000 subscribers. Only 12% of those subscribers report as Hispanic and merely 9% are reported as Black. Their shortage of readers involved in urban culture is emphasized when they describe their ‘alternative audience’ as the 20% subscribers who documented attending rock concerts. by Jasmine Brianna Ellison Squirrels are known for their frantic behavior. However, this year the squirrels daring behavior has escalated; rifling through garbage cans, attempting to get into homes or darting into the streets more than usual.
The reason for the squirrel uprising is due to the surplus of nuts available last summer. The excess food supply created a baby boom for squirrels. However, circumstances are causing squirrels to take risks they did not resort to in the past. Due to the reduction in this year’s nut supply, the audacity the squirrels have displayed comes from the crucial responsibility to feed their young. This year squirrels have found alternative ways to feed their families, including disturbing other animals and human food supply. Unfortunately, this has led to the surplus of squirrels being hit by vehicles in the street. The Farmer’s Almanac reports one motorist confirmed counting 390 dead squirrels in a 50-mile drive to the Massachusetts border. The heightened squirrel activity is going to continue through the season. To help avoid hitting the little rascals, simply avoid swerving. Experts say squirrels dart back and forth to confuse predators as a survival mechanism. As our vehicles are interpreted as predators, the solution is to drive in a straight line. |
