by Jasmine Brianna Ellison The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) sued the state of Connecticut on June 28th, 2018.
The lawsuit argues that farm districts where minority residency is low, benefit unfairly as a result, weakening urban districts. The suit reveals the practice of Connecticut counting prisoners when creating districts. This act is called gerrymandering: In this case, the act of choosing district boundaries to give your party an advantage. States rely on The US Census Bureau for statistics when deciding district lines. The bureau counts people where they live or sleep most of the time. For an inmate, that is behind bars. If granted, Republican state senator John Kissel would be most affected by the change. As his district comprises of seven towns, farmland and six country prisons near the Massachusetts border- thousands of inmates would be disqualified and his district total would deplete immensely. by Jasmine Brianna Ellison According to a study by Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, 80% of female restaurant workers have experienced harassment from a coworker on the job, while two-thirds reported being harassed by a manager.
Workers that rely on tips are even more at risk and employees in states with minimum wage as ow as $2.13 an hour for tipped worker, harassment is twice as likely to occur compared to those who receive higher hourly pay. By Jasmine Brianna Ellison Victoria Secrets is known to have an elegant, yet, unintimidating environment. However, this atmosphere is one that is reserved only for the customers. Employees are not as pampered and have reported environments where staff is overworked and undervalued.
Between harassing customers about the Angel card (in which they do not receive commission), being torn from task to task before completion, lack of hours in off season and high expectations during the holiday season, the only way to climb the Secret’s ladder would require you to literally make lingerie your full time job. by Jasmine Brianna Ellison A bail bondsman is a person representing an agency or corporation that will act as collateral and offer money or property as bail. This acts as a legal promise that the defendant will appear in court.
Defendants and their families often sign contracts to pay roughly 10% of the bond proposed by the court. In certain circumstances, insurance companies will approve a down payment, as low as 3%, at which time the signee is responsible for an agreed upon payment plan. If payments are not received, or the defendant does not appear in court, the bail bondsman is allowed to act as a bounty hunter. A skilled professional dedicated to find and capture a fugitive in exchange for a monetary reward. The reward, is considered the “bounty,” and is typically a percentage of the bail. Families are held responsible for thousands of dollars’ worth of debt, regardless of which path the defendant takes. by Jasmine Brianna Ellison ![]() Upon appointing a vice president at the Renzulli Gifted and Talented Academy, it seemed only right that Freddie DeJesus would be promoted to the position. Longtime teacher and leader at Renzulli, was acting as the school leader without compensation for the past two years. However, the school district decided not to appoint him the school’s vice principal, instead choosing a white applicant with no connections to the school. Latia Maldonado, said parents of the students respect DeJesus and would like his leadership back. She stated, “He’s well-respected. He’s the heart of the school. And we want somebody who looks like us in that position. We want Mr. DeJesus reinstated to his position and we want more teachers of color in the Hartford school system, people who look like us and can represent us.” by Jasmine Brianna Ellison ![]() It is 1940 in Greenwich, Connecticut, and a black chauffeur is charged with the rape of a married white woman. The news quickly labeled Joseph Spell as the "Negro chauffeur," "the colored servant," and even "a colored man with a bad hangover." These words incited fear in the white community by painting a vivid picture of blacks as savages on society. The publicity storm triggered an emergency at the New York headquarters of the NAACP. The organization's initial concern was the tone of the news stories. Roy Wilkins, NAACP assistant secretary, described as the news reports as “highly colored," when he complained in a telegram to the city editor of The Daily News. Thurgood Marshall the top lawyer in the NAACP organization was on a train to Greenwich two days after the arrest. by Jasmine Brianna Ellison MERIDEN, CONN.- With the ability to order on a large touchscreen and checkout at the screen, access to phone charging ports, and the new and improved glass window allowing customers to view their food being made- Taco Bell on West Main Street is living up to the new vision officials have for Meriden in the upcoming years.

This research includes identifying their customers by race, sex, age, income and more. Large corporations, such as Wal-Mart, use this research for additional purposes, for example, product placement. They strategically decide which products to place in each store based on what residents in each location are likely to purchase. by Jasmine Brianna Ellison The statue of Christopher Columbus at the City of Newburgh’s waterfront was defaced October of 2018. The bronze figure’s hands were painted bright red following the Columbus Day celebration.
Upon a warning from UNICO National, Stamford, police stepped up patrols of Columbus Park and its statue. “We’re definitely going to bump up patrols, especially at night,” said Police Chief Armando Perez on Friday. “We’re preparing.” by Jasmine Brianna Ellison The news caters to the residents in the suburban and industrial areas of Connecticut, and the faces of the inner-city are seen only in the capacity of crime or charity.
The total population in the state is 3,588,184 million and approximately 88% of that number is considered a minority. Although the minority population exceeds the White, The Hartford Courant reports a total of 73% White subscribers. The highest circulated newspaper in the state maintains roughly 300,000 subscribers. Only 12% of those subscribers report as Hispanic and merely 9% are reported as Black. Their shortage of readers involved in urban culture is emphasized when they describe their ‘alternative audience’ as the 20% subscribers who documented attending rock concerts. by Jasmine Brianna Ellison Squirrels are known for their frantic behavior. However, this year the squirrels daring behavior has escalated; rifling through garbage cans, attempting to get into homes or darting into the streets more than usual.
The reason for the squirrel uprising is due to the surplus of nuts available last summer. The excess food supply created a baby boom for squirrels. However, circumstances are causing squirrels to take risks they did not resort to in the past. Due to the reduction in this year’s nut supply, the audacity the squirrels have displayed comes from the crucial responsibility to feed their young. This year squirrels have found alternative ways to feed their families, including disturbing other animals and human food supply. Unfortunately, this has led to the surplus of squirrels being hit by vehicles in the street. The Farmer’s Almanac reports one motorist confirmed counting 390 dead squirrels in a 50-mile drive to the Massachusetts border. The heightened squirrel activity is going to continue through the season. To help avoid hitting the little rascals, simply avoid swerving. Experts say squirrels dart back and forth to confuse predators as a survival mechanism. As our vehicles are interpreted as predators, the solution is to drive in a straight line. by Jasmine Brianna Ellison In November 2018, meteorologists in the state predicted the coldest Thanksgiving in the Northeast in recorded history. If you have ever shopped at the Wal-Mart located in Wallingford, Conn., you may have witnessed a bus drop off the students of Choate Rosemary Hall. The naïve teens flood the aisles in the supermarket with their ready for the world attitudes and parade around the store with their perceived freedom as ‘adults.’ The students from the fancy busses are applicants from sister boarding schools all over the world.
However, Choate Rosemary Hall actually has an impressive list of American figures who have attended the school. The success Martin Luther King, Jr accomplished in the Civil Rights movement is notorious. However, the events leading up to his reign as speaker of the people, for example, his short yet meaningful time in Connecticut, has evaded many history books.
1. The Nation of Islam Organizes in Hartford
The time Malcom X spent in Connecticut in regard to the Nation of Islam (NOI) began as a humble favor. Malcom had established a house of worship in Springfield, Mass. and a Hartford, Conn. native traveled to hear him speak. She was moved by his words and invited him to speak in the city of Hartford. In the summer of 1955 domestic workers—maids, cooks, and chauffeurs—gathered in a small apartment in a Hartford, Conn. public housing project. Without a glamorous stage, dazzling cameras, or hounding reporters- his words alone were enough to incite the group. The Hartford NOI was inspired to grow their number and soon assembled 40 people. By 1956, Malcolm X founded Temple No. 14 in the city’s north end at 2118 Main Street. He returned to Hartford at least twice in January 1957. The FBI tracked and recorded his movements even in Connecticut courtesy of their local office in New Haven. The Temple 14 soon moved to 1097 Main Street. In August 1959, Malcolm returned to the new location and spoke again: “We do not advocate violence but we do not turn the other cheek either,” he told his listeners. “When you kill a snake that is not hate. You are merely protecting yourself.” The next month he narrated a home movie about his first trip to Africa for the Hartford temple members. All during this period police and federal agents tailed Malcolm, and Malcolm knew it. In answer to a question about the Vietnam draft, the controversial leader replied that he would not tell anyone to become a conscientious objector because he knew the government was listening. He would, however, personally refuse to be drafted. |
